Attractive career of merchant Navy
The students who
have passed Standard-12 Science stream can get admission to the – 4-years Bachelor in
Marine Engineering or 3-years Bachelor in Nautical Science course by appearing
in IITJEE exam.
The job :
In merchant navy,
the first is deck department among its main departments which is headed by Master, Chief Mat
or Captain. Than come ‘first mat’. To assist both these officers, there is Second
Mat, thereafter, Third
Mat and Harbour Master and than comes pilot of ship and Serang. So far as
Engine Department is
concerned, it is headed by Ship Engineer who is assisted by Second, Third,
Fourth Engineers and
other staff. This department also consists of Electrical Officer, Radio Officer
and Sea Canny. This ‘Sea
Canny’ is holding steering of the ship. Thereafter comes ‘Service Department’
where Chief Steward and
Chief Cook are the boss. To assist them, there are cook makers and mess man.
Nautical
surveyors, light keepers, dress divers and skin divers comes at bottom of
hierarchy.
Method of selection / training :
For getting
appointed as Navigating Officer on merchant ships, ‘Certificate of Competency’
is essential as per
provisions of Indian laws concerning mercantile marine master and Mats exams. Those who are
qualifying from T.S. ‘Chanakya’ (as navigating officer) gets first competency
certificate of ‘Second Mat’
(foreign trade). Following the degree course of Nautical Science at training
ship ‘Chanakya’,
training for one year on Deck Department of Merchant Ship as Cadet Officer is
being imparted during
which period stipend is also paid. Thereafter only, he is issued certificate of
‘Second Mat’ (Foreign
trade). Candidates who has passed examination of B.Sc. Nautical Science from
Mumbai University are
given certain relaxations for exam of Certificate of Competency. Examinations
for marine engineers
are being conducted by the Director General of Shipping, Mumbai working under the Union
Ministry of Surface Transport.
Admission to B.Sc. (Nautical Science) at T.S. Chankya, Navi Mumbai (for 3
years) and Marine Engineering Degree Course (4 years duration) of Marine Engineering and
Research Institute (MERI), Kolkatta :
Admission to both
these courses are being granted through JEE conducted every year for IITs in the month of
May. There is no separate entrance exam for T.S. Chanakya (90 seats) and MERI
(120 seats). For
appearing in JEE exam, the candidate should forward a separate application to
the Director General
of Shipping for admission to these courses, after submission of form to the
IIT.
For admission to
T.S. ‘Chanakya’, students wearing power glass is not allowed, however, his
normal vision
should be 6/6 in both the eyes whereas, in case of MERI, students wearing
spectacles are allowed, but
he should be with power not more than -2.5 or +2.5 as also he should not have defective color
vision.
